Jeff. G. Wingert Dies in California

Former Esteemed Resident of Punxsutawney Succumbs At the Age of 75 Years

Jefferson G. Wingert, for years one of the most prominent attorneys and esteemed residents of Punxsutawney, died Saturday in Whittier, California, at the age of 75 years after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Whittier, where burial was made.

He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College and studied law in Brookville with the late George A. Jenks, who later became Solicitor General of the United States. He came to Punxsutawney in 1899 and practiced law here until 1913, when he left for Whittier, where he speedily became one of that community's leading attorneys. He was city solicitor and a magistrate there at the time of his death.

For a few years while here, he was associated in business with George L. Glenn. With the late James H. Maize, he helped to organize the Farmers Bank in this city, and was one of the prime movers in the organization of the Farmers and Miners Trust Company, of which he was president when he decided to seek his fortunes in the West. He was active in every civic enterprise here and no resident was held in greater esteem. Judge Jesse C. Long, president judge of Jefferson County, read law in his office here.

He married Martha St. Clair and to the union four children were born, James, Jefferson Jr., Donald and Martha, all in California. He married again in about 1928 to a resident of Whittier, who with a son survives him.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Wingert, pioneers of this county, and was the last surviving member of the original family. Several half brothers and sisters survive, however, including Charles, of Marchand, Indiana County; Emma, now of Cherry Tree; Ella, of Pittsburgh; Clark, Beulah and Lottie, in California.

Notes: Jefferson died on November 19, 1943
His second wife was Judith Woodruff and they had a daughter, Judith Woodruff Wingert.
