His father was Wiley "Willie" Jernigan who lived in the Bloomington Springs Community in Tennessee. His Mother was Sarah Jane "Sallie" Short. He was the grandson of Kedar and Sarah Jernigan. He was the father of one son Grady Jernigan and nine daughters. One daughters died in infancy (Irma). John was a school teacher early in his adult life and later a Justice of the Peace. He tried many civil cases. When he became unable to travel he tried cases at his home. He lived in Double Springs, Boma, and Baxter, TN. during his life. He was the husband of Mahulda Jane Thompson. She is the mother of all his children.
