"Mrs. Savilla Bowen
Mrs. Savilla Bowen, widow of the late J. W. Bowen of Brandy, died at her home early Thursday morning, October 11, after an illness of several months. She was the daughter of the late Arnold Nethers and Ellen Huffman Nethers, of Rappahannock and Madison counties. She was 63 years of age.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Francis Allison, of Christ Episcopal Church, Brandy, where she had been a member for many years, on Friday afternoon, from her residence at Brandy. Special selections were rendered both at the home and at the grave by the church choir.
She was also a member of the Culpeper Chapter, No. 79, Order of the Eastern Star and was buried with all the honors of the Order. The Eastern star service was held at the graveside in the Masonic Cemetery, with Mrs. Julia Brown, the Worthy Matron, officiating, assisted by other members of the chapter.
The casket bearers were George R. Lillard, George Nethers, W. C. Nethers, Oscar Hudson, L. R. Nethers, and Festus Hudson. Honorary pallbearers, who carried the large collection of beautiful floral tributes, were J. L. Coleman, W. H. Newlon, William Mitchell, Orin Fant, W. L. Scales, C. W. Carpenter, J. P. Bailey, C. J. Gooch, J. C. Matthews, Harry Bowers, Dr. J. E. Parks, K. R. Abbott, C. B. Aylor, L. M. Farmer, Cary Humphries, Hood Wayland, C. A. Griffith, T. I. Martin, Harold Hawkins, and Haliburton Swan.
Mrs. Bowen is survived by the following sons: Warren, Kermit, and Edward Bowen, of Brandy; Lucian, Arnold, Roger, and Ray Bowen of Washington, D. C., and Nethers Bowen, of Nethers. Her only daughter, Ellen, preceded her to the grave eleven years ago. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. H. F. Hudson, and a brother, J. W. Nethers, of Nethers, and eight grandchildren.
Those from a distance for the funeral on Friday were Miss Arline Fleming, Mrs. May Bayliss, Mrs. Archie Compton, Carl Aylor, and Mrs. Nellie Ganns of Washington, D. C.; Mrs. Rixey Embrey and Ellis Aumack, of Alexandria; Mrs. Inez Aumack and granddaughter, Olda Aumack, of Barboursville; and a large number of friends and relatives from all sections of Rappahannock, Madison, and Culpeper counties.
Mrs. Bowen had been living in Brandy for the past 45 years, where her late husband, J. W. Bowen, was engaged in the mercantile business for many years."
