The Culpeper Exponent, Culpeper, Virginia, Thursday Morning, May 2, 1918:
"Death of J. W. Bowen.
The death of Mr. J. William Bowen, on Monday night, at his home in Brandy, from heart failure, was a shock to the community in which he has lived for over thirty years. Though long in declining health, and recently in a critical condition, Mr. Bowen was able to be out of the house all day Monday and attempted light exercise in his garden. Retiring at his usual hour, he seemed better than he had been for some time. When the morning was well advanced, it was found that he had died in the night without warning or sound.
Interment was made in the Masonic Cemetery at one o'clock p.m."
