Wednesday, September 22, 1886
We have to announce the sad news this week of Mrs. Hiram Hasty's death, which occurred at 3:15 yesterday morning, September 21, 1886. She was afflicted with something like cancer of the stomach, and had not been able to retain any food on her stomach for quite awhile. She had only been confined to her bed 4 or 5 weeks, and during that time had suffered the most excruciating pains at times. She was 63 years of age on last December 24th, and had been a consistent and devout Christian of the M.E. Church from childhood. In her death the people of Newport lose a good citizen and neighbor, and her 5 own children and 2 step-children, a kind and generous mother. Her husband, Mr. Hiram Hasty, died a number of years ago. Her youngest son, Elmer, who served 5 gallant years in the regular army, is now some place in the west with a government surveying party, and does not know that the good mother he left about one year ago is now cold in death. Letters and telegrams have been sent him, but no word has been received from him. The funeral will take place from the family residence, at 2:30 this afternoon, Rev. J.W. Parrett performing the last sad rites, after which her remains will be followed to the Johnson Cemetery, 2 miles north of town, and gently laid away to moulder back to mother dust.
