ANNIE REBECCA HOTTINGER/BARTON BROWN
Reba Ann, as she was better known, was named for her great-grandmother Rebecca Ann Hottinger, the mother of Mary Margret Wilt. Her birth was recorded in Isaac Newton Barton's family Bible as Annie Rebecca Barton, although each census recorded prior to her marriage to Elmer Brown listed her as Rebecca and/or Reba Hottinger. The Isaac Newton Barton Bible - Page Two, Family Births - "Miss Annie Rebecca Barton was born 8 June 1881."

Reba grew into young womanhood within a family which had little to no income. Isaac Barton, peddled horseradish on the city streets, while her mother, Mahala, took in laundry to feed the family, therefore at a tender age, Reba resided with and worked as a servant for a wealthy family in Harrisonburg, Virginia. And although, her occupation may not have seemed to one of glamour or importance, Reba's ability to tackle the toughest tasks earned her a fine reputation and the recognition she deserved. Word of her expertise traveled fast as Reba migrated first form Harrisonburg and Central Township, both in Rockingham County, Virginia and later in Wadsworth in Medina County. Reba's resume afforded her employment with the finest families of the time. Reba took a short break from this line of work to become an inspector for an Akron, Ohio rubber company immediately prior to 1920. After her marriage to Elmer, she returned to servant work, acquiring employment by a wealthy family in Wadsworth, with whom she continued working long after the birth of her only child, Nellie.

The 1926 death of her thirty year-old sister, Mamie Alice Barton-Halliwell, was a horrifying event for Reba. Within the next three years Mamie's husband, Glenn Clark Halliwell, also lost his battle with Consumption. Reba along with her husband Elmer, sought and was awarded guardianship of their eight-year old nephew, George Newton Halliwell. Although the family changed George's name to Junior Brown, his step-mother Ell Nora Jones-Halliwell (the second wife of Glenn) never relinquished her parental rights. Therefore, the much anticipated adoption by the Brown couple never occurred. The Brown family's home at 285 South Lyman Street in Wadsworth was raised and replaced with by brick office building.

Her death was recorded at the Ohio Bureau of Vital Statistics as Reba Ann Brown, aged 61 years 5 months 10 days, a white, married female, died 18 Nov 1942 at 10:00 a.m. in her home, located at 285 S. Lyman Street, Wadsworth, Medina, Ohio. Cause of Death: Acute myocardial infarction, onset 18 Nov 1942; anemia sectous, onset 1940; antisioclerotic heart disease, onset 1935. She was buried 20 Nov 1942 in Wadsworth, Ohio. Reba was a housewife, the wife of Elmer Brown. She was born 8 Jun 1881 in Harrisonburg, Virginia to Isaac Barton, born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Mahala A. Hottinger, born in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Funeral Director: Billow & Sons, Wadsworth, Ohio. Informant: (husband) Elmer Brown.
