Elijah Eagleton Thompson was born December 12, 1844 in Blount County, Tennessee, the son of Nathan D. Thompson, Jr. and Sarah Jane Blackburn. His mother died nine days after his birth. In 1846 his father remarried and soon after 1850 the Thompson family settled in Looney township in Polk County, Missouri. On January 17, 1862 Elijah Thompson enlisted in the Confederate Army of Missouri in Capt. A. C. Bradford's company of the 5th Missouri Regiment of Infantry. As an infantryman he fought in the battles of Elk Horn Tavern, Iuka and Corinth, Mississippi and the siege of Vicksburg. In June of 1863 during the siege of Vicksburg he suffered a wound to his right arm that necessitated the amputation of his arm above the elbow. He was taken prisoner and sent to Oxford, Mississippi from where he was paroled and returned home to Missouri. On February 3, 1867 he married Louisa Malvina Lee in Greene County, Missouri. They were the parents of five children: Ursula (1868-1949), Walter (1871-1941), Lillian (1875-1957) and twins Weldon (1879-1899) and Sheldon (1879-1880). In 1877 the family moved to northern Stone County and settled on property located near McCullah Spring on the Old Wire Road. Their post-office address was Logan, Missouri. The Thompson family lived in this community for many years. Elijah E. Thompson was a farmer. He died August 28, 1908 in Stone County and was buried in Charity Cemetery.
