Ursula Lee Thompson was born November 28, 1868 near Brighton in Polk County, Missouri, the oldest child of Elijah E. Thompson and Louisa M. Lee. She moved with her family to northern Stone County, Missouri in 1877, where they settled on property located near McCullah Spring on the Old Wire Road. Miss Thompson drew a map of the immediate area where her family lived that was published in the book "Down the Old Wire Road in the Missouri Ozarks" written by Fern Angus (Marionville, Mo., privately published, 1992, page 66). The picture of Ursula Thompson (right), taken about 1906, is found on page 67 of the same book. She became a school teacher and taught for 23 years at several rural schools in the area during the latter 1800's and early 1900's. She attended teacher training courses at Springfield Normal School (later SMS). On December 12, 1924 she was appointed postmaster at Hurley, Missouri, in which position she served for 13 years. She remained single all her life. After retirement she lived with family members in Stone County. She died at the home of her sister, Lillian Springer, in Crane, Missouri, on December 9, 1949. The date of her death is incorrectly shown on her tombstone.
