Joseph Crouch was the son of John and Sarah Barbary Crouch and came to Washington County with his wife following his parents.

Joseph married Margaret "Peggy" Sandford 20 Feb 1778 in Henry County, Virginia. He was sheriff of Washington County. He was also a Revolutionary War soldier for Virginia.

John and Margaret had the following nine children:

*John Crouch (1782-2823)
*George Crouch (1784-1866)
*Elizabeth Crouch (1787-1850)
*Joseph Crouch Jr. (1791-1830)
*William Crouch (1793-1844)
*Patty Crouch (1796-?)
*Martha Crouch (1796-?)
*Sanford Crouch (1800-1836)
