Sylvester owned land and a blacksmith shop where the small town of Newfurg, Missouri was located about 5 miles west of La Plata in Macon County. All that remains of Newburg today are a couple of houses.

In Memorium.
---Sylvester Buck was born in Athens county, Ohio, Dec. 21, 1819, and was married to Sarah Griffin, August 31st, 1843. They were blessed with three children, two girls and one boy. Sarah, his wife, died Feb. 20th, 1858. He chose for his second companion, Mary Jane Dixon. God gave to them five children, three girls and two boys, all of whom are living. In May, 1864, he left his native state and moved to Wisconsin, removing to Missouri in 1868 he located six miles west of La Plata, where he lived continuously, working at his trade, blacksmithing, up to the time of his death, which occurred on Feb. 12, 1889, in the 69th year of his age. He had the best of medical aid and many willing hands were ready to administer to his wants, but death had marked him for its own. How hard it is to part with those we dearly love, a good, kind neighbor, always ready to help those who were in need, many have said to the writer, "It seemed so hard to have to give him up." He was everybody's friend and will be missed, not only in the family circle, where the vacant chair-the vacant seat at the table will speak in its pathetic silence of the noble heart now pulse-less and stilled forever, but his place of business will also recall in the years to come, the memory of that affectionate husband, kind father and generous neighbor. He was willing to go, and spoke feelingly to his son-in-law and brother. The funeral services were held at his home, conducted by Rev. James Hubbard, in the presence of a large concourse of people. His silent form now sleeps in the La Plata cemetery to await the glorious resurrection morn.

Peaceful by they silent slumber,
---Peaceful in the grave so low.
Thou no more wilt join our number,
---Thou no more our songs shall know.

Dear friend thou hast left us,
---Here thy loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God that has bereft us,
---He can all our sorrows heal.
