Lela May Slaubaugh, 77, of Horse Shoe Run, passed away at her residence on Sunday, April 13, 2003.
She was born March 27, 1926, at Horse Shoe Run, the daughter of the late Gus L. and Lora A. Harsh Calcamp.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Slaubaugh, in 1984.
Survivors include four brothers, Wayne Calcamp, Magadore, Ohio, Lawrence, John and Cecil, all of Horse Shoe Run; three sisters, Juanita Stemple, Horse Shoe Run, Delores Kelley, Leadmine, and Virginia Roth, Thomas; a special friend, Eleanor James, Thomas; 67 nieces and nephews; great-nieces Tracy and Brian Sherwood and Donna and Eric Jackson; great-nephew, Danny and Peggy Cottrell; great-great-nieces and nephews, Krysten and Cody Sherwood, Emily and Alexander Jackson, Amethyst, Lacy and Emilee Cottrell.
Although she had no children of her own, she had been a second mother to all of her brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and extended family.
One brother and three nieces and nephews also preceded her in death.
She and her husband, Bill, worked tirelessly for their community. They first helped organize and start the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department and later Mt. Grove VFD. She, Bill and his sister, Ruth, formed the Mt. Grove Potato Festival. It was Bill's dream to have a Mt. Grove Bluegrass Festival; Lee did that after his death.
She was a member of the Mt. Grove VFD Auxiliary and Mt. Grove Ladies Aid.
Mrs. Slaubaugh finished her husband, Bill's, term as Preston County commissioner at his death and was elected to another term.
She was past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 936 Women's Auxiliary where she was selected Mother of the Year in 2002. She was a member of Terra Alta Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 578 Women's Auxiliary and the Maple Spring Church of the Brethren.
Friends will be received at the Hinkle Funeral Home today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Maple Spring Church of the Brethren in Eglon with the Rev. Tom McGinnis officiating. Interment will follow in the Gnegy Church Cemetery. The Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
