Tony Jacob Ayers, 54, lifetime Pulaski Countian and forester for 23 years, died en route to Pulaski General Hospital Thursday morning. Ayers, who lived in the Case Knife section of the county, joined the Virginia Division of Forestry as a volunteer fire warden in 1945. He held this post until his death. In 1967, he joined the U.S. Forest Service as a patrolman of the Jefferson National Forest. During the past year, he also served as operator of Peak's Knob Lookout Tower, atop Draper Mountain. Born Nov. 19, 1913, in Pulaski County, Ayers was the son of the late Charlie & Barbara Hubbard Ayers. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Frances Guynn Ayers; one daughter, Miss Leila Ayers; four sons, Tony J. Ayers Jr. and John Lee Ayers, both of Worcester, MA, Thomas J. Ayers of Atlanta, GA, and Tyler J. Ayers of Pulaski. Other survivors include one sister, Mrs. Mary Moore, Pulaski; one half-sister, Mrs. Betty Jones of Pulaski; three brothers, Edgar, Robert and Arthur, all of Pulaski; four grandchildren, and a stepfather, W.H. Guynn, also of Pulaski. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mt. Brook Baptist Church under the direction of the Rev. J.S. Akers. Burial will follow in the Hufford Cemetery. The body will be removed this afternoon from Strickler's Funeral Home and taken to the residence. It will be moved to the church one hour before services.
