J. N. BLANKENSHIP

J. N. Blankenship passed away May 14, 1957. "Uncle Nick," as he was known by everyone, was past 94 years of age, and had lived at Belle Plaine, Kansas for 75 years coming from Kentucky. He has run more hounds and killed more coyotes I guess than any man in the state of Kansas. He always kept a large pack of hounds.

In the early days before the highways were so bad and not so many fences, he rode a buckskin horse that enjoyed a race as much as Uncle Nick. He was one of the finest fellows to be on a chase that you could go out with. The nights did not get too long or too cold for him. Until one year ago he had a pack and still enjoyed them.

He was not sick, just worn out. He passed away very easy and quietly, just went to sleep. We the hunters, as well as the country in general will miss him. He leaves one son, F. C.; two granddaughters, several nieces and nephews and many, many, friends.

Peace unto him. He was a friend of mine.

NICK BLANKENSHIP CELEBRATES 93RD BIRTHDAY. 27 January 1956.

Nick Blankenship, one of Belle Plaine's oldest citizens, celebrated his 93rd birthday Friday evening January 27, 1956 at Nellie's Cafe. Mrs. Nellie Nye is one of his nieces. She served a delicious supper. A lovely cake baked by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Dola Blankenship, centered in the table.

The guests were relatives and old friends who had gathered together for a number of years to celebrate Nick's birthday. Several were former hunting friends of Nick's when he kept a pack of good coyote dogs. Lots of reminiscing was done and some "tall hunting tales" were told.

He received several nice gifts and many cards, some from Canada, Utah, California, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Indiana.

Those who enjoyed the supper with Nick were: Walter LeForce, Udall; Clyde Bandy, Augusta; Bill Ingle, George Nuttle, Barney Huddelston, Merle Russell, Woodie Blankenship, Merle Horst, Ivan Pore, Roy Hatfield, Bob Ingram and Felix Blankenship.
