Ft. Defiance-Arthur Vernon Wagner, 84, a prominent resident and retired railroad employee who was an extensive land owner, a farmer and livestock dealer in Augusta County, died in his sleep early Sunday morning at his home. Mr. Wagner had been up and around and seemingly enjoyed good health for a person of his advanced years.
A son of the late Elmer Stuart Wagner and Willie Baber Wagner, he was born on May 17, 1884, at Lyndhurst. He later resided at Charlottesville prior to moving to his present home and farm in 1924. Mr. Wagner was employed by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway for 45 years. Following his retirement from the railroad, he devoted his time to his farm.
His wife, the former Miss Berdie Harler, preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 1955. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Ladd.
Mr. Wagner is survived by one sister, Mrs. Helen Jabbour of Roanoke; and four brothers; Roscoe A. Wagner of Route 2, Bridgewater, Riley L. Wagner of Macomb, Ill., Clyde O. Wagner of West Palm Beach, Fla., and W. Rudolph Wagner of Route 1, Stuarts Draft. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Koontz and Lindsey Funeral Chapel at Weyers Cave. The Rev. Walter A. Sigman will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery at Ladd.
Active pallbearers will be Warren (Buddy) Gordon, W. G. Critzer, Wayman Western, Warren Mitts, A. M. VanLear, D. Luther Simmons, and Roy Simmons.
Honorary pallbearers will be Clinton VanLear, Paul VanLear, Clyde VanLear, Dallas VanLear, Riley Wagner, William Simmons, Jennings Fulton, Thomas Wagner, Richard Wagner, Randal VanLear, and Roff Wagner.
The body is at the Koontz and Lindsey Chapel where the members of the family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today. Relatives, friends and pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.
