James Jeffrey, the second child of Malichi and Martha Ann (Hilsabeck) Bell, was born in Searcy Co, AR, on March 6, 1873. He married Hattie Emeline Morgan, the daughter of Henry and Charlotta (Lynch) Morgan, in Spring Creek Township, Howell Co, on April 15, 1900.

Hattie gave birth to 10 children whose names are shown in her memorial.

James died in Hermiston on May 29, 1954. A notice appeared in the local newspaper: "James J. Bell - Services were held June 1 at Burns Mortuary Chapel for James Jeffery Bell, 81, who passed away May 29. Bell had been a resident of Hermiston for 13 years and an employee of the Umatilla Ordinance Depot.

Officiating at the funeral services was Rev. C.O. Ross. Vocalists were Billy Lilly and Nova Sanders with Pauline Stringer as organist. Burial was in the Hermiston cemetery.

Surviving Bell are his wife Hattie, of Hermiston; three sons, J.L. Bell of Taft, Emery W. Bell of Portland, and Jay J. Bell of Bridgeport, Wash.; six daughters, Mrs. Gladys Lawson of Missouri, Mrs. Letha McBroom of Arkansas, Mrs. Grace Goucher of Arkansas, Mrs. Virgie Harrington of California, Mrs. Niada Brown of California, and Miss Irene Bell of Hermiston: three sisters, 18 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Bearers at the funeral were Hogan Miller, Cecil Goodwin, Earl Vickers, Ben Gottschalk, Del Chistley, and Lee Rayburn."

Hattie died almost two years after James on March 4, 1956.
