Prospected for gold in California as a young man (he sailed from Philadelphia to Panama, crossed the Isthmus of Panama, and sailed to San Francisco, a 6 week trip); he was unsuccessful at prospecting, ran a boarding house for a time, and eventually returned home to Ohio to join his father's shoe business.

Occupation: Boots and shoe manufacturer and merchant.

After his father's death, he and his brother Edward and later his brother Charles John continued the family business, continuing the family name of J.C. Bockius & Son. In 1886, Lewis bought out his brother's interest and took his sons, Charles John and Edward G. into the business, now known as L.V. Bockius & Son.

Lewis Bockius was one of the organizers of the Valley Railway (now the B & O Railroad); one of the organizers of the City National Bank of which he was vice president; helped to organize the West Lawn Cemetery; and was one of the large stockholders in the Diebold Safe & Lock Co.

He Married Caroline P. Graham on Septemeber 11, 1855.
