Funeral services for John J. Tonihka Sr. will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 9:30 am at the Chapel of Macy & Son. Interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, OR.

John died April 15, 2009 at his home in Amity. He was 62. Viewing will be Sunday from 1:00-5:00 pm and Monday from 3:00-7:00 pm at the Chapel of Macy & Son.

Son of Theodore Ray and Lavada Thomas Tonihka, John was born August 19, 1946 in Chicago, IL. He grew up in Eagletown, OK. He enlisted in the Army in 1962 and served in Vietnam. He was awarded 6 bronze stars, 3 silver stars, purple heart, and Medal of Valor by South Vietnamese. He was also awarded the Medal of Valor by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. He served 3 tours in Vietnam as a sniper returning in 1970. He accumulated over 43 years of duty and service with 12 years active duty.

He married Rose Britt on January 16, 1971 in McMinnville. He loved hunting, farming, and spending time with his family and making them laugh. He loved his grandkids and he was a fantastic father.

Surviving are his wife, Rose, of Amity; sons, Ronald and John Jr. and daughters Robin French and Jill Martin, all of McMinnville, OR; and Crystal Tonihka-Casey, Canby, OR; a brother, Joey Sehon, Arkansas; sisters, Ahdohlowah Tonihka and Betsy Ohma Tonihka-McCoy, both of OK; Phedosia Perry, TX; Lynn Petty, ARK; grandchildren, Michael, Tiffany, Brandon, Matthew, Anthony, Vince, Alyssa, Jontae, Lyndon, Taylor, and Ashley; great grandchild Noah plus numerous nieces and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Ray Tonihka, a brother Wilson Tonihka; and sisters, Ruth Willene Bell and Theda Tonihka.

Memorials may be given to DAV or St. Labres Indian School c/ o Macy & Son Funeral Directors.
