Mrs. Nora Cowin, 63, Succumbs From Burns

Funeral rites have been arranged for a Shelby County farm wife who died at Major Hospital in Shelbyville, Indiana, Monday night as the result of burns suffered in an explosion at her home near Rays Crossing that morning.
The victim of third-degree burns over most of her body was Mrs. Nora (Lee) Cowin, the 63 year old wife of Frank Cowin. Mrs. Cowin was burned in an explosion, which ocurred as she attempted to light a fire in the kitchen stove with the use of kerosene. It is believed that the highly inflammable fluid exploded when it reached some live coals in the bottom of the stove. The blast of flames ignited her clothing and, after sinking into a chair as the result of shock, she ran screaming into the yard at her home. She was rushed to the hospital after neighbors reached the scene.
Mrs. Cowin was alone in the home at the time. Her husband was in a field nearly three miles away when the explosion occurred.
The last rites will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in the Loren H Murphy Funeral Home, with the Rev. A.M. Hamilton officiating. Burial will be made in the Miller Cemetery, Shelby County, Indiana. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2:00pm today.
Mrs.Cowin was the daughter of John Lee and Jane(Cowin)Lee, Mrs. Cowin was born in Shelby County on August 5, 1884. She was married to Frank Cowin, who survives with six children, Mrs. Audry Gill and John Cowin, both of Shelby County, Indiana; Mrs. William Archey, Rush County, Indiana; Mrs. George Kohler, Fayette County, Indiana; Mrs. Ray Berry, Lawton, West Virginia, and Mrs. Dale Robbins, Johnson County, Indiana; two children by a former marriage, Hollis Snyder, of Jennings County, Indiana, and Raymond McDonald, Decatur County, Indiana; and nine grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers: Clarence Lee, of St Louis Crossing, Shelby County, Indiana; Dillard Lee of Rays Crossing, Indiana; and Russell Lee, of Michigan, and three sisters, Mrs Charles Atkins, of Shelbyville, Indiana; Mrs. Ora Bennett, of Geneva, Indiana and Mrs. Clyde Hobbs of Shelby County, Indiana.

Mrs. Nora Cowin, 65, wife of Frank Cowin, suffered third degree burns in the explosion which ignited her clothing. Nearly every part of her body was burned.
It was the second accident of its kind within a week in this vicinity. The first victim is still in the hospital.
Alone at the time of the explosion early Monday, Mrs. Cowin first sank into a chair from shock as her clothing caught fire, and then rushed screaming from her home on the Eston Robinson farm, one mile east of Rays Crossing. She collapsed in the yard outside.
The seat of the chair in which she sat for but a moment was ignited, but the flames burned out without spreading in the home. The Manilla fire department rushed to the scene but somehow the flames had died.
The blast occurred as Mrs. Cowin was starting a fire in the kitchen range. She apparently had poured kerosene, or possibly gasoline, over the fuel in the stove in an attempt to ignite it. The blast followed and was believed to have showered the inflammable liquid over her clothing.
Her husband, tenant on the Robinson farm, was in a field nearly three miles away when the explosion occurred. Neighbors reached Mrs. Cowin before he could arrive.
The Cowin's have lived on the Robinson farm the past two years, and formerly lived near Shelbyville. The have several children.
