Truman Shaw who was born Feb 7, 1792, Rutland, Rutland County, Vermont was the oldest son of John and Tryphena (Bingham) Shaw. He spent his youth in Vermont and married Nancy Fay of Rutland Vermont on Nov 13, 1814. Truman became a Tanner and perhaps a shoemaker. This large family lived in Vermont, then New York and finally moved to Lapeer County, Michigan after 1831 and Belle Arbor was developed by the entire Shaw Clan that had followed Rev. Luther Shaw, Truman's brother, to Michigan. Truman set up his Tanning business near the Belle River in Belle Arbor and his sons worked with him and they also made shoes and other leather goods. Truman and Nancy buried their son Truman Bliss Shaw in Webster Cemetery when he died of Typhoid or Typhus January 18, 1839. Rev. Luther Shaw mentions his passing in his quarterly report to the Missionary Society as the first death in their small community. Later Truman (Sr) develops consumption and goes back to New York to try to relieve his symptoms but finally returns and succumbs to this disease on Aug 7, 1844 and is buried in WebsterCemetery. Due to the severe economic downturn in the middle 1800's, the Shaw's sold their land and dispersed to other areas.
