Berjoohy was born to a wealthy family in Trebizon, Armenia.

She came to the United States in 1908 through Ellis Island to travel to Chicago to marry Antranik Nerses Vartabedian. She traveled with her future brother-in-law and future mother-in-law under the last name Vartabedian.

In the fall of 1910 she and Antranik, along with their 21 month old daughter, Hasmick, and 9 month old son, Vartkes, relocated to Chico where they lived the remainder of their lives.

Up until age 91 or so, Berjoohy maintained her own home on East 8th Street and grew her own fruits and vegetables.

BERJOOHY VARTABEDIAN

CHICO - Private graveside services were held Nov. 9 at the Chico Cemetery for Berjoohy Vartabedian, 92, who died Nov. 6 in a local convalescent hospital.

She was born Jan. 19, 1885 to Mugerdick and Yugaper Kahrimanian in Armenia. She attended school in that country, coming to the United States in 1907. On April 7, 1907, she married Antranik Vartabedian in Chicago, Ill., and in 1910 they came to Chico, where she had resided ever since. Her husband died in March 1954. She was a member of the Chico Art Club.

Mrs. Vartabedian is survived by a son, Vartkes H. Vartabedian of Chico; two daughters, Nena V. Childs and Araks V. Tolegian of Sherman Oaks; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Robert Scott, pastor of the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church officiated.

Hall-Van Hook Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
