Haywood married Lula F. Tunstall, daughter of Robert & Louisa Tunstall of Granville County, around 1908 when he was about 28, and she 30.
The couple resided in Raleigh where Haywood worked for the NC State Penitentiary and retired as Director. They would become parents ti at least 2 known children: Thelma (1909) and Haywood Hinton Jr. (1920).
Haywood Sr. passed in 1958 at the age of 77. His wife survived him another 5+ years, passing in 1964 at age 85.
