Ivory Vesta Powell, was born the youngest of the Powell's in Evansville, Indiana. As a child she suffered a great loss with her mother dying when she was only 11. After her mother's death she was sent to live with a Swedish family. Her older sister, Olive, soon cared for her too in Chicago. When she was 16 she contracted Diptheria. She was taken to the hospital, while in the hospital they tried an experimental vaccination on her. She was the first patient at that hospital to recieve it. She stayed in the hospital for thirty days and couldn't move her legs. In the late 1920's her sister, Olive, took her to change her name legally to Ronni not Ivory. By the 1930's Ivory following her love and passion for music, found herself performing and working at a club owned by Al Capone. During the war she worked in an aircraft factory in Chicago. In 1941 she drove from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California with a friend. After the war ended she married Golden Eugene McCoy in 1948. As she got older she moved to Sedro Woolley, Washington to live with her son.
