Olive Drucy Powell was the third oldest of eleven children. She left home quite early. Olive was a strong and independent woman. She went to Chicago where she attended the Moody Bible Institute and became a college graduate there. She later worked on the Navajo Reservations and also worked as a personal chef for General Upshur during the war. It was while she was in Chicago that she went to the courthouse and legally changed her name and her sisters. She changed her name to Polly.

She later met and married Jack Bauer, a man who was in the military. The two moved out to San Diego and Los Angeles and lived there together.
