William Henry Powell was born in 1858, the first child of Joel Thompson and Elizabeth Balser Powell. William suffered a great loss at the age of six when his father died in the Civil War in 1864.

He married Emma Moore in 1886. In November of that year, Emma gave birth to twins; John and William Loren Powell. Following that birth, the next year in 1887 Emma gave birth to another child in the month of May, Henry. Both John and Henry died almost after birth. Emma died young and unexpectedly on May 25, 1887 leaving a widower and a child.

William Henry, sent his son away to live with Emma's family, the Moore's. A year after Emma's death, William met and married a Miss Wilhelmina Hawkins. They were arried August 1, 1888. Wilhelmina would give birth to 11 children but only 6 would grow into adulthood. Father of Charles Franklin, Pearl, Olive Drucy, Edith, Mamie, Herbert Thompson, William Gaylord, Cleo May, Ivory Vesta Powell and several infants.

He moved to Chicago with his daugther, Pearl, and lived with her until his death. He died April 4, 1941 in Chicago and is buried in Wunders Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
