GROVES - Lawrence Culver, 76, of Groves died March 23, 2009, at his home surrounded by all of his family. He was born in Port Arthur, TX on April 10, 1932 to Rosa Adams and J.G. Culver. He has lived in Groves for the past 50 years. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jo Marie (Dimpy) Bertoloni Culver; daughter, Roxanne Braswell and husband, Rick of Port Neches; son, Larry Culver and wife, Sally of Port Neches; grandchildren: Adam and Paige Braswell, Sarah, Michael and Kristen Culver all of Port Neches; brothers: Albert Culver of Nederland; Roy Culver of Groves; sisters: Juanita Culver and Estelle Maltos of Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Harvey Culver, Freddie Culver, Domingo Adams, Steve Adams, Lucian Adams, Joe Adams and sister, Beatrice Culver. Lawrence was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Lawrence was a Golden Gloves Boxing Champion. He served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, and graduated from the NCO Academy. He retired from James River, Orange, as a Maintenance Supervisor, with 28 years service. He was program chairman for 1MI. He was a long-time member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church where he served as president of the Parish Council for two years and a Eucharistic Minister for 20 years. He was a also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Santa Maria Council 1304. He was a charter member of the American Italian Club. Lawrence fought a courageous battle with cancer. He enjoyed gardening, sports, working out at the YMCA and dancing every Saturday night with his wife at The Pompano Club. The family thanks Dr. L. Sanders, Dr. G. Bruce Healey, Dr. G. Sean Healey, Dr. L. Ho and assistant Kevin Krise of MD Anderson. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Services will be Thursday, March 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Father T. Blanco officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Otis Ward, Adam Braswell, Michael Culver, Harold Johnson, Lucian Adams and Ralph Ruiz. Placement of the Pall will be done by grand daughters; Paige Braswell, Sarah and Kristen Culver. Honorary Pallbearer will be P. C. Whitton. Those wishing to make memorial contributions may do so to the scholarship program at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church or the Lucian Adams scholarship fund at Lamar-Port Arthur.
