John's hobby was making musical instruments: violins, violas, cellos, organs. Violin No. 10, made in January 1910, is in the posession of Denise Witwer Lahr. He played drum in the Rothsville Cornet Band and was a cigarmaker by profession.

Lititz Express (Lititz, Pa.), September 16, 1887: "Misc. - Mr. John M. Fry who has heretofore manufactured cigar bundlers in Isaac Reinhold's shop has moved to a more comfortable place at C. D. Butzer's."

Obituary: 11 Dec 1913, Intelligencer Journal (Lancaster, Pa.):
"John Frey
John Frey, a well known resident of Rothsville, died Wednesday, at his home in that village of heart failure, after a short illness. The deceased was 57 years of age and was a prominent lodge member, being a member of the Rothville Camp, P. O. S. of A. and of the Golden Eagles. Besides his wife, he is survived by the following children: Walter, John, Phares and Mrs. Henry Adams, all of Rothville. The funeral will be held on Saturday, with services at the house and later at the Rothville Lutheran church, of which he was a member. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery."
