Minnie, as she was called, attended a one room schoolhouse. She worked cleaning houses along with her sister Marie. Around 1919-20, Minnie left the farm and joined her sister, Marie Gix and family, in Pontiac, (Oakland County) MI. She again found work, cleaning houses, and eventually was able to get a job as a switchboard operator at the local telephone company in Pontiac, Michigan.
Minnie met William Galbraith and they were married on June 14, 1920, in Royal Oak, (Oakland County) MI. They had three children; Charles, Grant & Shirley. After they were married they lived with Ralph and Marie Gix for a while on Paddock St in Pontiac. Eventually they bought a house on Second St in Pontiac and lived there until their deaths. They also had a cottage at Williams Lake in Waterford, Michigan.
In their retirement years, they spent many winters in St Petersburg, FL. Minnie and Bill celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1970, with a party hosted by their children, at the First Federal Building Hall on Huron Street in Pontiac.
Minnie received great joy from the fellowship within her church, Bethel United Church of Christ in Pontiac, Michigan (formerly Bethel Evangelical and Reformed Church). She also was in the Eastern Star Organization. Minnie was an excellent cook and made wonderful pies, cookies and desserts. She loved to host family gatherings. Minnie and Bill had a large garden and she would can fresh fruits and vegetables. They also grew grapes and Minnie canned grape jelly.
Minnie spent her final months hospitalized with cancer at Pontiac General Hospital, as well as several nursing homes in the Pontiac area. Wherever she was, Bill was at her bedside daily. Minnie passed away at Grovecrest Nursing Home in Pontiac, Michigan, on May 19, 1972, due to carcinoma of the colon. (This had been her second bout with this disease.) She was 78 years old. Minnie is buried at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, (Oakland County) Michigan, next her husband, William.
