Ralph Lewis was born in Farmersville, New York, to Caleb and Joanna (Wade) Lewis, the tenth of eleven children. He served in Company D, 64th NY Vol. Regt. Infantry during the Civil War, then came home to marry Emma Otto on 3 April 1866. He farmed in Cattaraugus County, New York, then did some work as a teamster for the emerging oil industry in McKean County, Pennsylvania. Soon after that, Ralph and Emma Lewis and their family homesteaded in Keya Paha County, Nebraska in 1883. They were the parents of seven children:

Stillman Otto Lewis, married 1) Belle Spencer 2) Jessie Lockwood.
Frank Albert Lewis, married Josephine N. Ballard.
Harry DeAlton Lewis, married Adella Oralie Fitzpatrick.
Orra L. Lewis, died young.
Mary Loretta "Molly" Lewis, married Frank J. Rhodes.
Guy Weaver Lewis, married Anna Heiden.
Ernestine Elizabeth Lewis, married James L. Runyan.
