Born Jacob W Lewis, eldest son of Caleb and Joanna (Wade) Lewis, he married Susannah Austin about 1838 and they had two children, Allen and Martha. In 1847, he married Catharine Caroline Starnes. Their marriage record shows his name as Harvey M. Dixon, the name by which he appeared in documents the rest of his life, including census and Civil War records. Why he changed his name is unknown. In the 1860 census, the Dixon household included his brother, Guy C Lewis. Also proof of his Lewis genetic heritage: Harvey M. Dixon has descendants who are DNA matches to other descendants of Caleb and Joanna (Wade) Lewis.
