Joanna Wade was born to Jacob and Sarah (Jones) Wade in Sangerfield, Chenango (now Oneida) County, New York. In about 1804 the boundaries changed between Chenango, Oneida and Madison counties. The family appears in Chenango County in the 1800 census. In 1810 the family of J. Wade appears in Madison County, New York. By 1820 they were in Stafford, Genesee County, New York, as were Caleb and Joanna (Wade) Lewis.

Caleb Lewis and Joanna Wade were married on March 5, 1817, in Genesee County, New York. In the early 1820s, both Caleb and his father-in-law Jacob Wade purchased land in Cattaraugus County and moved there with their families.

Caleb and Joanna (Wade) Lewis had the following children:

1) Jacob W. Lewis, b. 11 August 1818, married first to Susanna Austin, then changed his name to Harvey M. Dixon and married Catherine Starnes.

2) Caleb Lewis, Jr., b. 22 June 1820, married Elizabeth Babcock.

3) Lovisa Lewis, b. 13 May 1822, married George W. Swift.

4) Oliver Lewis, b. 31 March 1825, married Clarissa Norton.

5) Joanna Lewis, b. 8 January 1827, married Ozro Wilson.

6) Eliza Ann Lewis, b. 19 January 1829, married John O. Badger.

7) Mary Ann Lewis, b. 4 Dec 1832, died 25 May 1833.

8) Guy Carlton Lewis, b. 13 June 1835, married Maria Sara Farrington (his headstone shows 1833).

9) Mary Ann Lewis, b. 22 August 1837, married G. DeAlton Swift.

10) Ralph Lewis, b. 3 April 1842, married Emma Otto.

11) Stillman Ennis Lewis, b. 25 February 1845, married first Julia A. Huntley, then Jennie M. Hastings.
