Stella's gradparents were Nathaniel and Mary Cheairs Scott, and James and Sophia Staples Garrott. Both sets of grandparents had large families and were large land owners in what is now east Tate County, in the general region from approximately Looxahoma to Poagville. On the Mississippi 1860 Agricultural Census for Desoto County (now Tate Co) James Garrott is listed with 1,600 acres and Nathaniel Scott is listed with 1,650 acres.
Stella's father, John Franklin Scott died when she was age nine. Her mother later remarried, but died when Stella was age 21. Stella married Dr. Crawford after her mother's death.
