Samuel Valentine was born March 3, 1796, in Creagerstown District, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Jacob and Anna Mary Freeze Valentine. He was married November 21, 1822, in Frederick County, to Elizabeth Martin, daughter of John and Mary Groff Martin. They were the parents of 10 children, only 4 of whom survived Samuel. The children were: James Vincent, Ann Margaret, Anna Louisa, Albert Sylvester, William Joseph, Mary Elizabeth, Emily Rebecca, Catharine Amanda, Martha Alice and George Samuel Valentine. Samuel passed away on June 29, 1873, in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland, and was buried in Elias Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery there.
