MEN IN SERVICE
Aboard the U. S. S. Mississippi, Toyko Bay -- Charles E. "Chink" Laine, Machinist Mate 1-c, got his first glimpse of the Japanese homeland August 27, when his shop, the U. S. S. Mississippi, sailed up to Tokyo Bay as par of Admiral "Bull" Halsey's powerful Third Occupation Fleet. "Chink" served as a member of the engine room force aboard the 40,000 ton battleship during the Aleutians, Gilberts, Marshalls, Bismarck Archipelago, the Palaus, the Philippines, and Ryukyus operations. He wears the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon (APO) with 8 Battle Stars, the Philippine Liberation ribbon with 2 stars, along with the American Theatre and the Good Conduct Ribbon. "Chink" is the son of Lottie Laing of Mer Rouge. He enlisted in the Navy, January 15, 1942, and has served aboard the Mississippi since February 25, 1942. Before joining the Navy he worked for the Snow White Cleaners in the Bastrop area, The present MISSISSIPPI claimed to have been sunk on several occasions by both the Japanese and Germans, was duplicating the feat of a previous warship bearing the same name. In 1853 Commodore Matthew C. Perry conned the first MISSISSIPPI into the then uncharted waters of Tokyo Bay to open world commerce to Japan.

Charles E. "Chink" Laing, machinist mate 1-c, has been honorably discharged after being in service since January 15, 1942. He was in Tokyo Bay when peace terms with the Japanese were signed. He says he doesn't know just what he will do, now that he is back home, but for a little while all he wants to do is rest, and see the folks he hasn't seen in such a long time.
