The True Citizen:

January 8, 1886

DIED: The whole community was shocked to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. Martha Blount, which sad event occurred at 6 o'clock Wednesday morning, after an illness of only about seven hours. Mrs. Blount was in the 63rd year of her age, and had been in bad health for several years, but the day before her death was feeling unusually well. She was born and raised in this county, and her long life has been spent in this city, and in her country home within a mile or two of it. She early attached herself to the Baptist Church, and her long life has been replete with Christian virtues and charities, and when the messenger came it found her ready to "cross over the river" to that land which is "fairer than this," and claim the glory which is the inheritance of the righteous.

She leaves six children to mourn the loss of a kind, indulgent and affectionate mother. Her funeral was preached in the Baptist Church on Thursday morning, by the pastor, Rev. W. L. Kilpatrick, and she was buried in the family lot in the city cemetery. Pray that your death be like hers.

This is a replacement headstone. The original death date was difficult to read and was incorrectly transferred as 1880 instead of 1886. Thanks to DianaB for discovering this error.
