The son of John L. & Elizabeth (Weaver) Lawrence, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg August 7, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 18 as a private with Co. B, 138th Pennsylvania Infantry. He deserted at Williamsport, Maryland, July 16, 1863, but returned August 15, 1863. Although a number of Gettysburg men who served in the regiment also deserted at that time, it appears that Lawrence was the only man court-martialed for it. The month-long trip home cost him six months' pay. He honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865, in Washington DC.

He married Joanna Agnes Chambers ca. 1866 and fathered Laura Magdaline (b. 02/20/67 - married a Smith), Louisa Catherine "Lucy" (b. 04/03/70 - married a Stich), Elizabeth (b. @1872), Rebecca (b. @1875), George A. (b. 05/21/79), Vincent Charles (b. 05/14/81), Jennie Rebecca (b. 08/13/74 - married a Jeffcoat), John F. (b. ?), James (b. ?), and Joseph (b. ?). In 1890, he lived in Mountjoy Township, Adams County, but died at his son John's house in Harrisburg. 1847 is also reported as year of birth.
