The son of John L. & Elizabeth (Weaver) Lawrence, in 1860, he was a blacksmith living in Oxford Township, Adams County. He stood 5' 4" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 6 as a sergeant with Co. H, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg.
He married Rebecca Louisa Klunk January 31, 1864, in Edge Grove, Adams County, and fathered Mary (b. @1865) and Mary Josephine (b. @1875 - married Henry Paff).
________________________________________________________________Henry Jacob Lawrence died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Pfaff, in Hanover, on Friday at 9:30 p. m., after an illnesa of seven weeks, from a complication of diseases. He was aged 75 years, 1 month and 28 days.
The deceased was a son of the late John Lawrence, of Irishtown. About 55 years ago he was married to Miss Kebecca Klun who died 2 years ago. Since which time he made his home with his only daughter, Mrs. Mary Pfaff.
He is survived by eight grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: James and George Lawrence, of Irishtown; Mrs. Catharine Staub, of Fairfield; Mrs Mary Johns, Mrs. Anna Lynerd and Mrs. Jerome Overbaugh, of McSherrystown.
He was a Sergeant in Co. H, 165th Penna Regiment, during the Civil War and served nine months under Capt. Win. H Bragonier.
Funeral was held at St. Joseph's church on Monday, interment in St. Mary's cemetery, McSherrystown. (New Oxford Item 9/6/1914)
