John E. Atwell was born near London, England, Sept 17, 1840 and departed this life Feb. 8, 1930.
He came to America at the age of 14 years and lived in Missouri with his parents until the age of 26 when he enlisted as a Union soldier, 36th IA. Inf., Co. H.
He was wounded severely and taken prisoner April 25, 1864, Mark's Mills, Ark.
He was married to Matilda Records [Ricords], 26 September 1865 or 1867.
He leaves to mourn his loss, 3 sons; and 3 daughters, Alfred M. Atwell, Edd Atwell, Mrs. E. Walter (Laura) Bird, Ben Atwell, Mrs. Wave (May) Allen, Mrs. Oliver (Maude) Gardner, one child James, preceded John Earl in death; 34 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and 2 sisters.
John and Laura Matilda homesteaded in Webster Township, 6 1/2 miles East of Mutual, Woodward County, OK in 1893. John was part of the last "Oklahoma Land Run".
