Richard Noler Atwell was born in Ramsgate, Kent County, England to John and Mary (Doughty) Atwell. He was the 3rd son they named Richard Noler [Knowler] and the only one of the three who lived to manhood. Richard was christened in St. George's Parrish church 30 May 1852.

He immigrated to the U.S.A. with his mother and siblings. They arrived via the New York harbor in October of 1855 on the Harvest Queen.

Richard's siblings were: Sarah West, Anne, John Earl, Mary Farley, William Henry, Francis Farley (who married William Dimmitt Hoover - brother of Clara), Ellen "Ella", George and Elizabeth "Lizzie".

Clara Hoover and Richard were married sometime before 28 June 1880 as I find them living in Rice County, Kansas with her brother Andrew Hoover.

They lived in Rice County, Kansas until Clara died in 1915. Clara was active in the Alden Baptist church. Richard appears to have been a farmer most of his adult life.

I am not sure if he died in Rice Co., Kansas or in Valley Co., Nebraska. I found him on the 1920 Census of Valley Co., NE. living in Ord with his niece Elizabeth J. (Erridge) Mattley on 14 January 1920.
