Stake Patriarch R.R. Dana Passes Away
Star Valley Stake Patriarch R.R. Dana, prominent pioneer resident and farmer-rancher of Thayne, died Wednesday morning Oct 8.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Thayne Ward Chapel Saturday, Oct 11 at 1 p.m. Friends may call at the Schwab Mortuary in Afton Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. or at the Thayne Ward Church Saturday morning from 11 a.m. until funeral time.

Services Held at Thayne Saturday For R.R. Dana
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct 11 at 1 p.m. in the Thayne Ward Chapel, with Bp. Howard Dana conducting, for Roswell Roy Dana, 80, Thayne former-rancher and for many years a Patriarch of the Star Valley Stake, who died Wednesday, Oct 8, 1969 at 6 p.m. of natural causes at his home in Thayne. Burial was in the Thayne Cemetery.
He was born March 11, 1889 at Willard, Utah to Roswell Root and Eunice Melvina Davis Dana. His parents had been called by the LDS Church to help settle the Mesa Valley in Arizona. After remaining there for several years, because of his mother's poor health, they returned to Utah, and then were called to help settle Star Valley. because she was expecting, his mother remained in Willard for the winter when his father came to the valley in 1888. Roswell Roy was born in Willard in the spring, and the next summer came to star Valley with his mother, and has resided here ever since.
He grew up in Bedford on a farm, and underwent the trials of early pioneer life. He was able to get only a few years of limited education. He engaged in hauling freight into the valley for many years with horses and wagons.
He was always active in the church, and throughout his life he has held many important positions. He was called when a young man to the Northern States Mission, where he served for 29 months. Upon his return he was sustained as Sunday School superintendent in the Bedford Ward, later as a counselor to Bp. Fluckiger for four years, then as Bishop of the ward. After serving for a short period of time, his call was extended to preside over the Thayne Ward as Bishop, also, and he filled this responsibility for several months before being released as Bedford Ward bishop.
He served as Thayne ward Bishop for 19 years, and after being released was called as a member of the Stake High Council, where he served for 14 years.
His greatest spiritual experience came when he was called as a Patriarch of the Star Valley Stake in August 1954, and ordained by Elder LaGrand Richards of the Council of Twelve Apostles. He served in this position until his death.
He married Carrie Hokanson on Oct 8, 1914 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Mr Dana was very active in civic affairs. He served as a member of the board of trustees, School District No. 19 as a director of the Bedford-Thayne Creamery, and later as a director of the Star Valley Swiss Cheese Company. He helped organize an Agricultural Adjustment administration (AAA) committee in Star Valley and worked on county road maintenance.
He was an avid sportsman and loved fishing and hunting. His integrity was respected by those who knew him. A favorite saying he quoted often was, "A true friend can be identified because he will be happy over your successes and sad over your failures."
He is survived by his wife, Carrie, Thayne; sons and daughters, Lafe, Las Vegas, Nev.; Mrs Lowell (Maxine) Jensen, Afton; Wilford E. Molino, Calif.; van, Thayne; and Ronald, Alhambra, Calif.; two sisters Mrs Geneva Ivie, Etna Wyo.; Mrs Earl (Rilla) Folkman, Ogden, Utah; 23 grandchildren 23 great grandchildren. Two sons, Roswell and Keith died at birth.
