Cora Lee Willis (Big Mama) as we all knew her, was the second daughter born to Jimmy Lee Willis and Lorena Curtis Porter. The other daughter was born to this was Bertha. When she was five years old her father died. Her mother remaired a man named James (Jimmy) T. Wilson in 1908 and three sons were born, Willie Lee, Buddy and Callie Wilson. When Cora was eight years old her name was changed to Cora Jean Wilson. She often still used Cora Lee, a name which she gave to two of her own children. Cora met the man she would marry in church in 1921 in Granger Texas. Church was a good place for these two young people to meet because it would define and shape the rest of their lives. Delover Burns and Cora Wilson were married in 1922 in Granger Texas at the church they would pastor for the next eight years. They moved to Bellview Texas and started their family. Ten children were born to this union. Freddie Mae, Lillie Bell, Louis, Roberta, Willie Lee, Bobbie Lee, Dorothy Marie, Delover Jr., Shirley Jean, and Curtis James. The family moved to Austin Texas and Delover began to pastor a COGIC church in Industry. For the next 25 years they continued to pastor this church, until Dee (as she called him) became Superintendent D.L. Burns in the Austin district of the COGIC. In 1971 they founded their own church, Capital City Holy Temple COGIC which is still used today and pastored by their youngest son, Curtis. Big Mama was a woman who remembered Bible scriptures better than she remembered her children's names. She always believed that everything that happen was in the plan of God. She held strong to that faith when they buried their baby girl, Roberta in 1938. And again when they buried their son, Willie Lee, in 1970. She never lost her faith, no matter how tight money was or how hard the road ahead became. She faced the loss of her parents, her sister and two brothers, and three grand-daughters, Patricia Lackey, Jacquline Hardin, and Brenda Alfred. At the end of her life she still worked everyday feeding Big Daddy's many animals and seeing after which ever great-grandchildren were underfoot. Then one summer day in July, 1984, she sat down and said she was hot and tired, and then she was gone. Her beautiful husband of 62 years was lost without her by his side. He struggled for the next seven years one day at a time until he went home to be with her again. She left to mourn her passing her devoted and loving husband, Delover, her brother Callie, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends.
