Honey Grove -- Virgie Anna Smith, 98, lifetime resident of Honey Grove passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009 at Honey Grove Nursing Center.



Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Sat., Jan. 17, 2009 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Chapel in Honey Grove. Rev. Terry Cunningham will conduct the service.



Pallbearers will be Billy Campbell, David Campbell, Leon Campbell, David Carlock, B.J. Tarver and Scott Tarver. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove.



Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 25, 1910 in the Dial Community south of Honey Grove to parents, William Harrison and Margaret Ellen Cunningham Kirk. She married Ed Smith in 1942 in Honey Grove and he preceded her in death in 1964.



She was a member of the McKenzie United Methodist Church in Honey Grove. Virgie worked at various retail stores, McIver's 5 & Dime and Carlock's Dry Goods Store, on the square for 50 plus years. Later she worked for Evelyn Wise doing various jobs. She loved flowers and gardening. Oakwood Cemetery was her dedication for many years and she was the historian for families searching for loved ones.



She attributes her longevity to eating light and exercise. She walked daily through the streets of Honey Grove picking up what should have never been discarded.







She is survived by her sister, Lucille Campbell of the Dial Community and several nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Myrtle Tarver and Mary Merrell.
