Joseph was the son of Edmund Curd and Eliza Weston Thomas. He worked as a harness maker and was a member of the Masons Charleston Lodge #35 for 30 years, where he held various officer positions. He was also a member of the Charleston Volunteer Fire Department, where he was the First Assistant from May 1879 to May 1882 and Second Assistant from May 1882 to June 1883.

Joseph married Anne Eliza Landes November 10, 1860 in Coles County, Illinois and they had three children: Laura; George; Virgil. They later divorced.

Joseph married Olive Hite, daughter of Jacob and Eliza, on July 7, 1895 in Shelbyville, Illinois. They had no children. After his death, Olive married Charles Gerard.
