He was also a member of the Charleston Volunteer Fire Department, where he was the First Assistant from May 1879 to May 1882 and Second Assistant from May 1882 to June 1883.
Joseph married Anne Eliza Landes November 10, 1860 in Coles County, Illinois and they had three children: Laura; George; Virgil. They later divorced.
