Owen Thomas Curd was the first son born to Edmund Curd and Eliza Weston Thomas. In 1836 he and his family moved to Charleston, Illinois. He married Sarah Elizabeth Wiley February 6, 1850 in Coles County, Illinois. They had eight children. He worked as a saddler when they were first married then later as a clerk.
