Obituary: Merle M. Sears Was a Friend to Everyone
Merle McKinley Sears was born to James Harvey and Alice Nina Shipley Sears on Nov 19, 1896. He died Aug 10, 1982, in Franklin, Neb. after a short illness.
The family moved to Kansas in a covered wagon when Merle was quite young. They settled in Marshall County and later moved to Cedar.
On March 10, 1917 he was married to Eva Gertrude Hutson. To this union were born 12 children. The family lived most of the time around the Cedar area while the children were growing up.
His wife Eva and children Harvey, Enid, Glen, Joice, and Paul preceded him in death.
After the death of his wife, in 1964, Merle moved to Franklin, Neb., where he spent the remaining years of his life. There he made many new friends and continued to work as a caretaker of the Franklin Cemetery until the year before his death. He had a great love of flowers and always had many beautiful ones as he and Eva had done while she was living.
Merle was a genuine and loving friend to everyone he met, and was loved by all. In so many ways he shared his life with those with whom he came in contact and especially those he felt needed what he had to offer. He was honest and fair in all of his dealings. One of the principles he lived by was “whatever is worth doing is worth doing well,” and he taught this to his children. This principle was manifested in all he did.
Merle is survived by brother, Otto of Cedar; children, Vada Reed of Smith Center, Gael of Yuma, Ariz., Melba Lyster of Glen Elder, Keith of Redondo Beach, Calif., Leeta Rudolph of Almena, Cleo of Norton, and Beth Conaway of Red Cloud, Neb,; 36 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren
