Some say Joel died in Newbury, Belphe Twp, OH. Little Hocking is actually located in southern Belpre Township.

Joel was 1 of 9 children born to William Oakes & his wife, Relief (Whitcomb).

Joel married Susan (Bent) in about 1795 in OH.
Their 7 children:
1) Susan (1796-11/22/1829)
2) Elizabeth
3) William (1800-1811)
4) Daniel (12/20/1801-03/24/1869); m. Julia (Clough); 3 children: Cynthia C., William, Silas Bent Oakes
5) Sumner (b. 1804 - d. 04/28/1874); m. Ellen J. (Pilaker); see Sumner's memorial #88327861 for names of 7 children
6) Charlotte (01/11/1807-03/30/1844); m. James H. Guthrie in May, 1835; 3 kids: Charles H. (1836-1859); Lucy O. (b. 05/24/1838), m. James M. Hannan on 10/12/1858; Clarinda (1841-1842)
7) Lucy (1808-1822)
*All the children lived & died in the neighborhood of Newbury, OH, except Charlotte, who moved to Gallia Co.

Joel left Rutland, MA, in early 1789 with Isaiah Stone; they arrived in Marietta, OH, just a year after the founding of that town by General Rufus Putman. Joel played a prominent role in the settlement, as he was one of the spies or rangers stationed at Belpre to protect the settlers from the Indians. After the Indian wars were over & peace had been made, Joel made his permanent residence in the Newbury area, not far from the old stockade. Joel's old farm, located in what is now Little Hocking, was occupied in 1906 by his grandson, Silas Bent Oakes, the son of Joel's son, Daniel Oakes.
Joel & his partner, Griffin Greene, located the Scioto Salt Spring in Ohio.

Joel took an active part in the various Indian wars, his service as a "scout" being especially valued.
