He was raised in Clayton County, and educated in Studebaker rural school, Greeley, and Manchester. ..Francis enlisted 14DEC1943 at Ft. DodgeIA PVT U.S. Army Grammar School Grad .. worked as a heavy equipment and dragline operator and farmed northwest of Manchester.

Francis enjoyed traveling and working in his garage. He was a member of the D.A.V. and the American Legion.
