Delilah "Della" Futch (Fuchs) Strickland, the daughter of Elizabeth Salety "Lety" Cook Futch and Solomon Futch, Sr., was born November 7,1813 in Bulloch County, Georgia at the old Onesimus Futch Plantation. Onesimus Futch was her paternal grandfather. She had ten siblings and thirteen half-siblings. Her father was a Revolutionary War veteran. She married Elijah Strickland on August 18, 1832 in Statesboro, Bulloch County at the old Onesimus Futch Plantation. They were the parents of eleven children: Leander Strickland, Mary Ann "Pollie" Strickland Glisson, David Strickland, Henry Elijah Solomon Strickland, Sarah Ann Strickland Davis, Elizabeth Anne Strickland Richardson, Salety Anne Strickland Hobbs, John Elijah Strickland, Martha Anne Elizabeth Strickland White, Emaline Strickland Sims, and Eliza Anne Strickland Sims. Delilah and her husband were "pioneers of Bryan County." The 1860 census showed her, her husband, and younger children living in Putnam County, Florida. With war looming in 1862, they returned to Georgia. In 1880 Delilah was living with her daughter Martha Anne Elizabeth Strickland White near Rhoden Church, Roding, Bryan County, Georgia. Delilah Futch Strickland is buried in an unmarked grave near her husband in the Wise Cemetery (Old Backwater Cemetery) in Bryan County. She died at about age 77 in 1890 in Bryan County. Delilah's ancestors were from Minderdorf, Rheinpflaz, Germany and changed the spelling of the family name from "Fuchs" to "Futch." In German "Fuchs" means "Fox."

Delilah and all her direct female ancestors and descendants and their brothers are of the matrilineal clan of "Katrine" (mtDNA haplogroup K). DNA matriline testing reveals that is the same matrilineal clan the 5,000-year-old "Ice Man" found in the Alps is from. Katrine was one of seven women from whom almost everyone of European ancestry is descended. Katrine lived about 15,000 years ago on the southern slopes of the Alps in northern Italy near present-day Venice, Italy. Her people were hunters who lived on ibex and chamois and supplemented their diet with roots and small mammals. About 10% of people of European ancestry are descended from Katrine. I hope one of Delilah's descendants will add her photo to this site.
