John Elijah Strickland was born the son of Elijah Strickland and Delilah Futch Strickland on Groundhog Day, February 2, 1842, in Bryan County, Georgia. He had eight sisters and two brothers. In 1860 John, his parents, and younger sisters were living in Putnam County, Florida. When word of war spread, the family returned to Bryan County, Georgia where he, his father, his brother David (and probably his brother Henry) enlisted in the Confederacy, first in the Hardwick Mounted Rifles and then in the 7th Georgia Cavalry. John was one of the 230 badly outnumbered Confederate defenders of Fort McAllister when, on December 13, 1864, he was killed during the attack of 4,000 Union soldiers during Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's "March to the Sea." Fort McAllister, on the Ogeechee River, was the last point of resistance before Savannah fell to Sherman. The December 13th attack was led by Union Brigadier General William B. Hazen. The fort was under the command of Confederate Major George Anderson. On seven previous occassions, the fort had withstood sea attacks by Union ironclads. John was 22 years old and buried near Fort McAllister in a mass grave. His and other remains were probably among those later moved to Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. His ancestry was Lumbee Indian, English, Scots, and German. I hope one of John's relatives will add his photo to this site.
