Edith was the daughter of John W. Swan and Josephine Adella Clark.

In 1892, at the age of 15, Edith married Frank Hummer, and they had a daughter, Violet Irene. The marriage ended in divorce.

In 1895, she married Lewis C. Morris, which also ended in divorce.

July 23 1898, Edith married Harry Bruner Means, the son of James Douglas & Martha Annis (Hascall) Means.

Together they had 10 children;
William, Ruth, Raymond, Harry E., Adella, Frank, Gerald, Eunice, Frederick and Caroline.

Edith is remembered by her children as a loving and good mother, who died too young.
