Adolph S (Ad) Jensen, 88, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Martha Osmond in Thayne Saturday, May 17, after a lingering illness.
Adolph Senius Jensen was born May 5, 1870 at Sindal, Denmark a son of Jens Christian Jensen nd Anna Maria Anderson. He was a member of a large family. When he was seven years old he herded six cows for a few cents a day. There were no fences only a furrow marking the division of the fields. He attended a rural school for three terms.
The Jensen family belonged to the Lutheran Church, but when Latter-day Saint missionaries came to their neighborhood his mother attended a cottage meeting and was immediately converted. Later his father was also baptized.
After joining the LDS Church their financial circumstances improved so much it was soon possible for his mother and four children to leave for America. One sister was already in America. Adolph was eight years old then and remained with his father and other children in Denmark.
In April of the next year Adolph and his father left Denmark to join the other members of the family in Utah. One of his sisters did not come with them.
The family lived at Logan, where Adolph worked at many different jobs to help establish a home.
In 1888 his father, mother, and three boys came to Star Valley and homesteaded north of Afton. When their hay gave out that winter, they saved their cattle by getting slough grass from under the snow for them. Later he worked at Wooley's Ranch at Grays Lake and at the B.Q Ranch.
Adolph attended church at Afton while the rest of the family joined the Grover Ward. He played i the Afton Brass
Band and sang in the Afton and stake choirs.
In June 1898 he married Ida Eliza Kennington. They lived in the old Jensen house. In November 1901 he was called on an LDS mission to Denmark. He fulfilled a successful mission and had the privilege of visiting his brother and sisters who had remained in Denmark. Due to his knowledge of the Danish language he held many important positions there. He returned home in March 1904.
Adolph is the father of four living children, Lester Jensen, Salt Lake City; Oda Roos Sandpoint, Idaho; Lowell Jensen Afton; and Martha Osmond, Thayne. One son preceded him in death.
In 1930 he gave up farming and moved to Afton where he was prominent in church work. He served as president of the YMMIA in the presidency of the Stake Missionary Association, and for many years was a ward teacher, besides the many assignments he fulfilled in his assignments he fulfilled in his high priests quorum. He sent one son on a mission and donated liberally to many others.
Mr Jensen was on the finance committee for the Afton North Ward and spent many hours soliciting funds for its building program.
His home was always open to people who needed care or had no other place to go. Adolph's father lived with them until he passed away, as did Mrs Jensen's mother. A niece also was taken into their home as a member of the family.
Mrs Jensen passed away in 1950 and since then Adolph has lived with his children. He considered his hoe to be at Thayne with his daughter Martha Osmond.
Besides his four children and one brother, he is survived by nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
